Tips When Hiring A Lawyer
How to Hire a Lawyer:
1. Shop around. You do not need to hire the first lawyer you meet.
2. Do your research. Search publicly-available information about the lawyer such as newspaper articles, online reviews, and news about cases they’ve won (or lost) or their reputation in the community. You may want to contact the Law Society to make sure the lawyer has a license to practice and doesn’t have any disciplinary proceedings against them.
3. Ask friends and family for a referral.
4. Make sure you are comfortable with your lawyer.
5. Do not hesitate to ask them questions.
*** Before you meet with the lawyer it is Important to prepare a brief but complete summary of your case and to prepare important questions to ask them, so as not to waste time.
What to Ask a Lawyer Before You Hire Them:
- Their experience in the area of law you are involved in
- If they have handled similar cases
- Your case’s chances of success
- Their fees
- For a copy of their retainer agreement to take home and read before signing
